Why can't a notary public use a translator?

Notary Publics are required by law to communicate directly with their clients. This ensures that the client knows what they are signing and that the client is aware and unpressured. This cannot be accomplished through a translator because a translator may intentionally or unintentionally misrepresent information to either notary or signer. Clients must find a notary that speaks their language or they can go to their consulate for assistance. See additional resources at the bottom of the page.

Why do you need a valid ID to notarize my document?

I require a valid ID for notarization because as part of the notarization I am certifying that you are who you say you are. This requirement helps combat fraud and ensures that the signature on the document is genuine.
